    We are now accepting nominations for the 2019 STEP Ahead Awards-to honor women in manufacturing and celebrate their accomplishments so that we can inspire the next generation.

    Over the past six years, the National Association of Manufacturers' Manufacturing Institute's STEP Ahead Awards have honored 802 women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering and production (STEP) careers. They hold positions at all levels of manufacturing, from the factory floor to the c-suite, and illustrate the widespread impact women have on shaping the industry, whether they are running the company, designing the next big product or testing innovations on the shop floor.

    Are there peers or colleagues of yours who deserve recognition and whose stories can encourage others to follow their lead? Visit to submit your nomination.

    The nomination period will close October 5, 2018.

    STEP Ahead Award Nominations

    As shown by our annual participation in The Manufacturing Institute's STEP Ahead Awards, we at Toyota welcome the opportunity to recognize our accomplished female employees for their positive impact on our company and excellence in manufacturing. One way that we ensure our employees are selected as award candidates is our internal nominations process. After implementing this new practice, we saw positive results right away: In 2018, the maximum number of Toyota nominees were selected as STEP Ahead Honorees and Emerging Leaders. Each award winner was an exceptional representative of Toyota, and we are confident in their capabilities as industry role models.

    I'm sure that we share this interest in nominating the best and brightest individuals in our companies for the STEP Ahead Awards. Below is an overview of our internal process. If you have any questions about our process, or would like to learn more, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

    Our internal process is moderated by an executive committee comprised of four Toyota employees: an HR representative along with three plant presidents, each of whom is a STEP Ahead Award alumna. Every year, we confirm participation with the previous committee members; otherwise, we must appoint new employees to the executive committee. Once the committee is squared away, draft emails and internal nomination forms must be written, approved, and sent to all Toyota plant presidents, HR department heads, and other company manufacturing groups. Nominations are returned to our HR representative one month before the official Manufacturing Institute deadline. The HR rep separates applications into Honoree and Emerging leader categories, checking that all requirements are met and noting the internal performance rating of each nominee. The organized nominations and performance ratings are then sent to the executive committee, who select their top 3 candidates for each category. The HR rep organizes a final conference call with the committee to officially select Toyota's nominees. For the rest of the nomination process, the HR rep acts as the point of contact with the Manufacturing Institute, officially submitting nominee applications and notifying candidates of the Institute's decisions.

    I've attached here the Toyota process to help you prepare in your nomination plans for the 2019 STEP Ahead Awards. Feel free to take some of our ideas and add in a few of your own to tailor your internal nomination process to your own company's needs!

    At Behlen Mfg, recognition of our outstanding workforce is not only an effective retention strategy but also one that contributes to our successful workplace culture. Like so many other companies, we were excited initially at the prospect of being able to recognize our outstanding female leaders within the company, but then we feared that narrowing down the top candidates for the STEP Ahead Awards would be in reality a daunting, time consuming process. Even as a medium-sized manufacturer, narrowing down the best candidates requires time and effort. Behlen has proudly participated in the STEP Ahead Awards nomination process every year since its inception in 2012, and over the years we've devised a plan to streamline nominations and narrow down the top candidates in an efficient and effective manner!

    We partnered with The Manufacturing Institute to share this best practice on internal nominations. This internal process is led by the Behlen STEP Ahead alumnae group. Each individual in the group prepares a list of women to discuss as potential nominees and after measuring each candidate against the award criteria, the top candidates are selected for interviews with the alumnae group. The interview process allows us to draft a more thorough nomination application for the essay section. For more detailed information on implementation, please see the attached document for reference.
